BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – On the afternoon of Monday, Sept. 8, an unacceptable incident occurred off the campus of Battle Creek Central High School, threatening the safety of our students and disturbing the peace of mind of families across our community.

While the incident was not school-related, its proximity to the high school is deeply concerning to both Battle Creek Public Schools and the Battle Creek Police Department

Incident summary
At approximately 3 p.m., Battle Creek police responded to reports of a disturbance just north of the high school.

Preliminary information indicates a verbal altercation occurred between a group of individuals in a vehicle and two students on foot, ages 15 and 16. The individuals involved are known to each other, and the conflict originated outside of school. During the incident, an undetermined number of shots were fired. A student bystander was struck and sustained a non-life-threatening injury. The student was treated and released. No other injuries were reported.

The safety and well-being of our students remain the highest priority for BCPS, city leaders, and law enforcement.

“Community conflicts that spill into areas near our schools have a lasting impact on our students, creating fear and emotional harm,” said Dr. Kimberly Carter, superintendent of BCPS. “Let us be clear: BCPS will not tolerate behaviors that threaten the safety or peace of mind of our children. Together with law enforcement and community partners, we are taking immediate steps to protect our students and ensure our schools remain safe spaces for every child.”

Protective Actions

  • Increased Safety Measures: A Battle Creek police school resource officer was already on scene at the time of the incident and responded immediately. Additional officers arrived within moments to secure the area. Moving forward, the police department will increase its presence around the high school, including enhanced patrols during dismissal and other high-traffic times. These efforts are part of a coordinated strategy to ensure students feel safe and supported in and around school grounds.
  • Student Support: On-site counselors and community partners from Summit Pointe and Grace Health are available to meet with students.
  • Staff Support: School staff have access to support resources as needed.

Out of an abundance of caution, the two students involved in the altercation have been removed from school while the investigation continues.

“This is a serious matter, and we’re responding accordingly,” said Police Chief Shannon Bagley. “We’re doing everything we can to protect our kids and our community, and to ensure those responsible are held fully accountable.”

The incident remains under investigation. No further details are available at this time.
