Firefighters, Lifecare Ambulance resuscitate dog after Battle Creek house fire

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a residential fire on Orchard Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1. Car 3 arrived within three minutes, finding smoke coming from the roof of a two-story, wood-frame home.
Rescue 2 and Truck 1 advanced a hose line to the first floor, where the fire started in the kitchen. Engine 3 and Engine 5 searched the second floor and checked for fire extension. Engine 4 established a water supply, and Rescue 6 secured the utilities.
The home was occupied at the time. All residents evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported. The fire extended into the second floor and was under control within 15 minutes. Damage is estimated at $200,000 to the structure and $50,000 to contents. The cause is under investigation by the Fire Marshal.
During the second-floor search, firefighters found a mixed-breed golden Labrador, limp and barely conscious. Crews worked with Lifecare Ambulance to resuscitate the dog for 15 minutes. By the time crews left the scene, the very good boy was alert, walking around, and receiving pets from responders.
This outcome is a powerful reminder that smoke alarms save lives — and when we say “family,” we mean every member. The BCFD offers free smoke alarm installation to residents, including specialized devices for those who are hard of hearing.
