BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City of Battle Creek has earned gold status in the 2024 Michigan Green Communities Challenge, a statewide program recognizing leadership in sustainability and environmental stewardship.

This achievement reflects the collective efforts of all city departments, not just those traditionally associated with environmental work. From public safety and public works to planning, finance, and community engagement, teams across the organization contributed by implementing innovative practices, improving resource efficiency, and advancing long-term sustainability goals.

Key highlights from Battle Creek’s gold-level initiatives include:

  • Energy Efficiency Upgrades: The city transitioned to high-efficiency LED lighting at three municipal facilities, one city parking lot, and the downtown business district. These upgrades reduce energy usage and contribute to improved public and staff safety.

  • Expanded Transit Services: The transit department broadened public transportation routes to include areas outside city limits, introduced extended service hours, and launched alternative ride-share options to increase accessibility and better serve community needs.

The city’s gold status reflects its strategic commitment to sustainability, with efforts spanning clean energy, mobility, land use, and community engagement. These actions demonstrate Battle Creek’s dedication to building a resilient and forward-thinking community for all.

Battle Creek joins a select group of Michigan communities recognized for exemplary sustainability leadership. The city has previously earned gold status in 2019, 2022, and 2023.
