Battle Creek police investigate fatal rollover crash in Irving Park

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Battle Creek Police Department (BCPD) is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early Monday morning in the first block of Irving Park Drive.
At approximately 1:10 a.m. Monday, July 14, first responders from the BCPD, Battle Creek Fire Department (Car 3, Engine 2), the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office, and LifeCare Ambulance were dispatched to a reported rollover crash. Upon arrival, officers found a vehicle that had rolled over and two injured passengers. One patient was unresponsive, prompting requests for additional fire and medical units.
Both occupants—an 18-year-old male and a 17-year-old female, both from Battle Creek—were transported to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, the 18-year-old male was pronounced dead. The female remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle, driven by another 18-year-old Battle Creek male, lost control while performing reckless maneuvers—such as “doughnuts”—in the park and parking lot. During the incident, the two passengers were hanging out of the vehicle’s windows and were ejected when it rolled.
Alcohol and reckless driving are believed to be contributing factors. The driver was not injured and was arrested and lodged at the Calhoun County Jail on the following charges:
- Operating while intoxicated and reckless driving causing death.
- Operating while intoxicated and reckless driving causing serious injury.
The crash remains under investigation by the Battle Creek Accident Reconstruction Team. The BCPD urges all drivers to make safe choices behind the wheel. A single decision can have life-altering consequences—for yourself and those around you.
