BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City of Battle Creek has begun the search for its next chief of police following Chief Shannon Bagley's announcement that he will retire by the end of 2026 after more than 30 years of service in public safety and law enforcement. 

The city has retained Public Sector Search & Consulting to conduct a national search for the department's next leader. The recruitment period begins on Friday, Sept. 18, and will remain open for four weeks. Candidate review is expected to begin in October. 

“Shannon has been an exceptional leader and a valued member of our city team. He has never hesitated to step up when called upon, whether leading the Police Department or serving in additional leadership capacities to ensure continuity and stability for our organization,” said City Manager Amanda Zimmerlin. 

“His dedication to public service, commitment to our community, and willingness to go above and beyond have left a meaningful mark on Battle Creek. On behalf of the city, I want to thank Shannon for his service and wish him all the best in retirement.” 

Bagley joined the Battle Creek Police Department as deputy chief of investigations in September 2021. He was appointed interim chief of police in January 2023 and named chief of police in June 2023. While serving as chief, he also assumed interim leadership of the Battle Creek Fire Department from September 2024 through April 2026. 

Before joining the BCPD, Bagley retired from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety in 2018 after 25 years of service. He then joined the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Public Safety Department, where he held the rank of captain. He is a graduate of the college's police academy and holds degrees from Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Spring Arbor University. 

"It has been my honor to serve this department and this city," Bagley said. "I will always be grateful for the people and relationships that made this journey so meaningful. I have been fortunate to work alongside such talented people throughout the city. I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident in the people who will carry this mission forward." 

Bagley said public service is more than a job; it's about making a difference in the lives of others. He said he leaves knowing the department will continue to serve with courage, compassion and purpose, and that its greatest chapters are still ahead. 

Following the application period, candidate materials will be reviewed in October. The city anticipates hosting a community meet-and-greet event with finalist candidates in November, along with formal interviews as part of the selection process. 

Zimmerlin said the city is seeking a leader who values community engagement, supports officer development and will continue strengthening trust between the department and the community. 

The goal is to select the next chief of police before the end of the year to support a smooth leadership transition.
