Citizens Police Academy begins in January; applications open now

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Battle Creek Police Department, in partnership with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police, will host its annual Citizens Police Academy starting in January.
The program is designed for business owners, community leaders and engaged neighbors who want to:
- Learn about police procedures and community safety initiatives from all three agencies.
- Participate in interactive sessions with officers, including special units, tactics, use of force, and scenario training.
- Collaborate on strategies to enhance public safety and trust.
Citizens Police Academy 2026 Sessions:
- Wednesday, Jan. 7 | 5–9 p.m.
- Saturday, Jan. 10 | 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, Jan. 14 | 5–9 p.m.
- Saturday, Jan. 17 | 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, Jan. 21 | 5–9 p.m.
- Saturday, Jan. 24 | 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Participants must attend at least 80 percent of the sessions. Makeup dates are scheduled for Jan. 28 and Jan. 31 if a class is canceled due to weather.

- Requirements: Applicants must pass a background check.
