New details on siren upgrade project for Battle Creek

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City of Battle Creek is sharing updated details on the city’s outdoor warning siren upgrade project, including a projected repair schedule.
As part of ongoing emergency preparedness efforts, the city is upgrading all 10 outdoor warning sirens, which alert the public during severe weather and other emergencies. Some sirens may not activate during the next monthly test at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, due to intermittent failures caused by aging equipment.
Thanks to a partnership with Calhoun County and funding from the Safeguarding Tomorrow Revolving Loan Fund Program, planned upgrades will improve siren performance, reduce false activations, and add two-way health monitoring:
Phase 1 - Fall 2025: Two sirens will be addressed ahead of the others:
- N. Washington School Siren – Physical repairs
- I-94 Rest Area Siren – Full replacement
Phase 2 - Spring 2026: Upgrades to the remaining sirens will begin after completion of an Environmental Historic Preservation (EHP) study, expected to take 6–8 months.
- Eldred Water Tower Siren - 122 Eldred St. - needs repair
- Westlake School Siren - 1184 S. 24th St. - needs repair
- Post Foods Siren - 275 Cliff St. - needs repair
- Battle Creek Tower Siren - 70 W. Michigan Ave. - operational
- Urbandale School Siren - 123 N. Bedford Rd. - operational
- Riverside School Siren - 650 Riverside Dr. - operational
- Verona School Siren - 825 Capital Ave. - operational
- Beckley Water Tower Siren - 5230 Beckley Rd. - operational
Monthly siren tests will continue the first Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. If you do not hear a siren near you during the test, it may be one awaiting repair.
