City of Bangor to allow overnight on-street parking this winter on trial basis
Bangor, Maine – The City of Bangor this winter is modifying its parking rules and on a trial basis will allow on-street parking during overnight hours outside the Downtown Parking District.
City staff have been working for more than a year on a series of changes to promote more housing in Bangor. One of those changes includes reducing the number of required off-street parking spaces for many dwellings, and this change is the impetus for the trial period.
This modification to off-street parking rules may necessitate a change to the City’s on-street parking rules during the winter, and conducting the trial run will help the City better make that determination.
The winter parking rules, which normally extend to March 31, also required that residents follow an odd-even parking scheme on City streets during the day (on odd-numbered days vehicles need to be parked on one side of the street and on the opposite side on even-numbered days). This requirement also is being relaxed during the trial period.
With the trial in place, residents will still be required to move their vehicle off City streets when a citywide parking ban is announced. Such a ban is necessary to allow Public Works crews to more quickly and efficiently plow or remove snow from the roads. There will be times when a parking ban is announced for the Downtown Parking District, and this will require vehicles downtown to be placed in off-street parking and does not affect parking outside the downtown district.
When a citywide parking ban is announced, the following parking lots will become available for off-street parking from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.:
Signs will be placed at the entrance to each of these lots to indicate they are available for parking during parking bans. Additionally, temporary no-parking signs will be placed on the edges of the road where Public Works will be removing snow.
No-parking notifications will be issued through the City’s mass alert system and on its social platforms.
Residents are reminded to adhere to permanent street signs indicating no parking. The trial does not change parking restrictions already in place in some parts of the City.
