Town of Palm Beach Alerts and News Releases
Barge Traffic and Bridge Openings
Over the past few months, the town has received comments regarding unscheduled bridge openings disrupting traffic. The Town has been in frequent communication with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) about bridge openings (both scheduled and unscheduled). Almost all unscheduled openings are related to restricted mobility vessels, such as barges being transported by tugboats, and federal regulations require bridgetenders to open on demand for these vessels.
Currently Palm Beach County, in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is conducting a waterways restoration project Bonefish Cove Restoration Project, that requires multiple barges to travel daily from near the Palm Beach Inlet to South of the Lake Worth Bridge. The Town is making requests to limit or control these project-related barge openings with Palm Beach County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
As efforts to mitigate traffic congestion on behalf of the community continue, updates will be provided when meaningful progress or successes occur.
The bridge schedule and known traffic impacts can be viewed on the Town’s website’s TRAFFIC IMPACTS webpage. To receive the Town’s traffic alerts and news releases, register here.
