List of People Who Do Home Repairs
We have compiled a list of local people who do a variety of work in homes, from taking out air conditioners to doing home repairs. They have been recommended by Bill Feeney, owner of Hudson Line in Hastings. Bill designs and builds custom made furniture. He has worked with many people who repair, maintain, fix and build things in homes. This list includes people he has personally worked with and others that come highly recommended by his colleagues. We have contacted them, and all are willing to give a discount to Hastings seniors. If you are interested, please contact Senior Advocate Anne Russak, at 478-2380 Ext. 644.
FISH NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Marty and Lynda Merchant who take the calls for FISH (Friends in Service Helping) are receiving an abundance of calls for rides for medical appointments. They are in need of additional drivers. If you, or someone you know, could do some volunteer work, please call Marty and Lynda at (914) 999-2090.
NEW PROGRAM “HASTINGS SHORT HOPS”
Need a ride in Hastings? Call 914-810-4483 on Mondays, leave a message, and you will receive a return call. Short Hops is similar to FISH in that drivers are volunteers, but unlike FISH, they will take Hastings residents to ANY location in the Village of Hastings. This is a pilot program sponsored by the Hastings Senior Council, running through August and September. At this time the rides are available on Thursday afternoons from 12:30-3:30. Reservations need to be made on Monday prior to the Thursday for which a ride is needed. Please help spread the word to friends who may no longer be driving or do not have access to a car
Lending Program
I have a favor to ask: if anyone, or if you know of anyone who has a knee scooter, and they no longer need it, I could use it for our lending library.
Please help spread the word that the Hastings Community Center has a lending program if someone needs a walker, cane, crutches, wheelchair, or other necessary items for residents. If you hear of a neighbor or family member in need, or if you are ever in need, please contact me.
The Hastings Fire Department has also provided us with “In case of Emergency” cards. So, if you would like one, stop by the Community Center.
For those of you who may not know, we have a senior bus that takes people shopping on a weekly basis. It’s usually on a Wednesday and is a great service. You are picked up at your home and taken back home to your door. You may not need the service, but if you know a friend or neighbor who might benefit from such a service, have them give me a call.
Thoughts for August
I read this post from a young girl who unfortunately passed away at the age of 27. I thought it was just beautiful.
A Final piece of Advice from Holly Butcher-written the day before she passed away from cancer at just age 27.
It’s a strange thing-knowing you’re going to die young. At 26 I thought I had time. To fall in love, to start a family, grow old.
Now, I understand how fragile life really is. Every single day-it’s a gift, not a guarantee.
Holly writes, “I’m not writing this to scare you, but I’m writing to remind you; really live.
Stop stressing over little things. Be kind to your body-move it, nourish it, stop criticizing it. One day you’ll wish you had appreciated it.
Go outside, look at the sky, feel the sun, just be.
Spend less time chasing “stuff’-more time making memories. Don’t skip moments with people you love.
Laugh more, write a note, tell someone you love them.
Complain less, give more, helping others brings more joy than anything you can buy.
Be present, put your phone down, show up-really show up.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t need a perfect body, or a perfect life.
Just follow what makes your heart light up. Say no to what drains you. Make changes when you need to.
