CARBONDALE –
On 04-06-2026, at 5:47 a.m., City of Carbondale Police Officers responded to the sound of multiple shots being fired in the 600 block of North Bridge Street. Officers arrived and learned the suspect(s) had already left the area prior to their arrival. Officers learned a residence was damaged as a result of the gunfire, but no injuries were reported. Officers collected evidence from the scene that confirmed gunshots had been fired.
During the course of the investigation, officers located a suspect vehicle in the 400 block of West Cherry Street. While conducting the follow-up investgation, officers observed persons of interest enter a vehicle and leave. An attempt was made to stop this vehicle in the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue. The driver refused to stop and fled from officers. Officers pursued the vehicle. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashing at the intersection of East Chestnut and North Wall Streets. The crash resulted in minor property damage to the involved vehicle and a sign. There were no reported injuries. After the crash, multiple suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
Two reported stolen firearms were recovered as a result of this investigation. Two arrests have been made associated with these stolen firearms. Iziekiel D. Garner, age 20, of Herrin, Illinois and Zion M. Hill, age 18, of Carbondale were arrested. Garner was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, and Resisting a Police Officer. Hill was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. Garner and Hill were both incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail pending a detention hearing.
A civic alert was broadcast requesting the public to avoid the area during the investigation.
