Driver arrested for DUI and hit and run after he rolled his vehicle and fled the scene
On Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at approximately 9:05 pm, officers with the Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD) were dispatched to Steele Lane at the Southbound HWY 101 offramp to investigate a report of a solo-vehicle rollover collision into a pole. Several community members called 911 to report the collision and advised the SRPD Communications Center the driver had run from the scene. Callers provided a description of the driver, who was seen running west on Steele Lane. Officers responding to the area contacted a man in the 1600 block of Range Avenue who fit the description of the person seen fleeing the scene of the collision.
The man, identified as 19-year-old Gabriel Chicon of Santa Rosa, appeared to be intoxicated and injured. Chicon was transported by ambulance to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries sustained during the collision. Officers continued their investigation and determined Chicon was the vehicle's driver at the time of the collision.
Officers also learned Chicon was on two counts of pretrial supervision related to two different assault cases. Per the conditions of Chicon’s pretrial release, and the fact he is under the age of 21, Chicon is not allowed to possess or consume alcohol.
Chicon was treated and released from the hospital, then booked into Sonoma County Jail for the following charges:
23152(a) VC - Driving under the influence
23136(a) VC - Driver under age 21 with a BAC of 0.01% or more
20002(a) VC - Misdemeanor hit and run
1203.2(a) PC - Misdemeanor violation of pretrial supervision
1203.2(a) PC - Felony violation of pretrial supervision
As the New Year approaches, the Santa Rosa Police Department wants to remind everyone about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Impaired driving can have tragic consequences. Driving under the influence puts you, your passengers, and others on the road at risk. Designate a driver, use taxi or rideshare services, or plan to stay overnight if you are away from home.
Santa Rosa Police Department case number 24-14805.
