SRPD News Release: Santa Rosa Police Department Prepares for the Implementation of AB 413 ("Daylighting Law") on January 1, 2025

SRPD prepares for the implementation of AB 413 ("Daylighting Law") on Jan. 1, 2025

Assembly Bill 413 (AB 413), commonly known as the "Daylighting Law," goes into effect on January 1, 2025. This law is designed to improve public safety and promote visibility on the streets by requiring drivers to maintain a clear distance from intersections, crosswalks, and driveways when stopped at red lights.

Under AB 413, drivers will be prohibited from stopping their vehicles within a designated "daylight" area—typically 15 feet—of intersections, crosswalks, or driveways when waiting at a red light. The goal is to prevent vehicles from blocking pedestrian crosswalks and driveways, improving visibility and safety for both pedestrians and other drivers. The law aims to reduce accidents, improve traffic flow, and ensure a safer environment for everyone on the road.

While the new law will go into effect on January 1, 2025, the Santa Rosa Police Department will take a phased approach to enforcement. In the beginning, we will issue warning citations to drivers who are in violation of the law. This initial warning period will allow the public to become familiar with the changes and adjust their driving and parking habits accordingly. Full enforcement, including the issuance of regular citations, will begin after the warning phase.

The Santa Rosa Police Department is dedicated to maintaining public safety and enhancing the quality of life for the community. Through education, enforcement, and collaboration with local residents, we strive to create a safer and more connected city.
