SRPD News Release: Student Arrest at Elsie Allen High School with Firearm

Student Arrest at Elsie Allen High School with Firearm

On Thursday, October 24, 2024, at approximately 1:15 p.m., the Santa Rosa Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a school administrator at Elsie Allen High School reporting that a student was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The student was currently being detained by multiple administrators inside a school office.

Upon arrival, officers entered the office and immediately took the student into custody. School administrators had already confiscated and secured the firearm prior to police arrival.  Officers confirmed that the gun was real, unregistered, and identified as an FN 509, 9mm handgun. The student, a 16-year-old male currently enrolled at Elsie Allen High School, will not be identified publicly due to his age.

Officers learned that before their arrival, school administrators were investigating a possible gang-related graffiti incident on campus involving the same student. During their investigation, the student was brought to the office, and a search of the student's backpack was conducted. During this search, a staff member discovered a small satchel containing the handgun and a loaded 24-round magazine. Following established safety protocols, administrators secured the student and the firearm and immediately contacted the Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD).

The Santa Rosa Police Department commends the quick and decisive actions taken by Elsie Allen High School staff to ensure the safety of students and staff. The student was subsequently transported to Juvenile Hall and booked on the following charges:
  • PC 626.9(b): Possession of a loaded handgun on campus
  • PC 25850(c)(6): Possession of an unregistered handgun
  • PC 29610: Minor in possession of a handgun
The Santa Rosa Police Department and Santa Rosa City Schools emphasize that weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on school grounds. Students who bring weapons to campus will face disciplinary action from school administrators and are subject to arrest. Ensuring the safety of students is a collective effort, and the police department and school district are committed to maintaining a secure environment.

Parents are urged to speak with their children about the serious consequences of possessing any weapons, including replica weapons, on school grounds, at home, or in our community. Staff and students are reminded to report any concerns immediately to law enforcement, school administrators, trusted adults, or through the STOPit app.
