Jokes About Bringing a Gun to School leads to Investigation by School Officials and Police and Discovery of a Boxcutter in a Student's Possession.

The Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD) emphasizes the critical nature of maintaining a safe learning environment for all students. Nationally, there has been an alarming rise in threats made against schools, and both students and parents must understand the seriousness of these actions.

Today, September 19, 2024, SRPD officers investigated an anonymous tip that a student at Slater Middle School made open, verbal threats to “shoot up” the school and the school of a friend he was sitting next to on a city bus. Additionally, the student bragged about being in possession of large quantities of illicit narcotics. The comments were overheard by a community member and were convincing enough for the community member to take action. Details of the conversation between numerous juveniles and a photo of the student taken by the community member were provided to SRPD.

An officer responded to Slater Middle School at approximately 7:45 am and met with school administrators. School administrators worked quickly to identify the student and bring the 14-year-old boy into the office without alarming other students. The student’s person and backpack were searched. A small, closed boxcutter was found in his pocket. No other weapons, contraband, or narcotics were found to be in his possession. Officers conducted a search of his residence, where no weapons or narcotics were located. Ultimately, the investigating officer learned the student was joking with friends and had no intention of bringing a firearm to school.

The student was issued an arrest citation for possession of a knife or cutting instrument on a school campus, 626.10(a) PC, and was released into the custody of his mother.

Making threats—whether in person, online, or through any other medium—is not only a violation of school policies but also a criminal offense that can lead to severe consequences. Students found to be making threats may face disciplinary actions, including suspension or expulsion, as well as potential legal repercussions that can impact their future.

We urge parents to engage in open conversations with their children about the implications of making threats. Understanding the gravity of such actions is crucial in fostering a safe school environment. Parents should encourage their children to think critically about their words and actions and to report any concerning behavior to trusted adults or authorities.

All middle and high schools in the Santa Rosa City Schools District utilize the STOPit app, which allows for the immediate and anonymous sharing of information with school administrators. Students can submit anonymous tips and upload photos and videos through the app, which is immediately received by designated school officials. We encourage families to learn more about this crucial tool meant to keep our students and campuses safe, and to also contact the Santa Rosa Police Department at 911 for emergencies and 707-528-5222 for non-emergencies any time to report suspicious or concerning incidents.

Together, we can work to ensure that our schools remain safe havens for learning and growth. Let’s prioritize open dialogue and community support to prevent threats and promote a positive school culture. Remember, if you see something, say something!
