SRPD News Release: Man struck by vehicle leads to arrest of gang participant for Assault with Deadly Weapon.

On 8/20/2025 at approximately 2:30 PM Santa Rosa Police Patrol Officers were dispatched to the area of Sebastopol Rd and West Ave regarding a disturbance.  The victim (22 years old, resident of Santa Rosa) in this event contacted SRPD and stated someone had tried to run him over while riding his bicycle.  The victim and suspect were then involved in a further confrontation.  The suspect was said to have been “throwing gang signs,” during the incident. Patrol officers arrived shortly thereafter and began investigating the matter.  It was learned the victim had been riding his bicycle westbound on Sebastopol Rd near West Ave when he was confronted by a male driving a vehicle. The suspect driver of the vehicle began yelling at the victim, causing the victim to turn into a parking lot in an effort to evade the suspect.  The suspect vehicle followed and closed the distance on the victim.  As the victim rode through the parking lot the suspect drove his vehicle into the back of the victim’s bicycle, striking the victim and knocking him off his bike.  The suspect then drove over the downed bicycle and stopped a short distance away.  The suspect then made gang related challenges toward the victim.  The victim then fled the area and contacted police.  The victim suffered minor injuries from the collision.

The license plate of the suspect vehicle was obtained and a “be on the lookout” was broadcast to patrol officers.  At approximately 6:00 PM the suspect vehicle was located by a SRPD patrol officer, and an investigative traffic stop was conducted.  The driver of the vehicle, identified as Eliel Ortega Rendon (19 years, resident of Cazadero), was contacted and subsequently identified as the suspect.  Ortega Rendon was arrested per 245(A)(1)PC Assault with deadly weapon and 186.22PC Gang Enhancement.  Ortega Rendon was booked at the Sonoma County jail.  The incident is being investigated by the SRPD Gang Crimes Team.
