***ORIGINAL MESSAGE***

SRPD Investigates Vehicle versus Pedestrian Collision

On Thursday August 14th at approximately 7:25pm, Santa Rosa Police Officers along with Fire and Medical personnel, were dispatched to a vehicle versus pedestrian collision near Northwest Community Park at 2698 W. Steele Lane.

SRPD Dispatch received multiple 911 calls stating that a pedestrian who was walking her dog had been struck while crossing W. Steele Lane toward the park. The vehicle involved was identified as a grey Honda that was stopped at the scene.

Officers and Medical personnel arrived on scene and located an unconscious female victim lying in the westbound lane of W. Steele Lane, just outside of the crosswalk at the intersection. It appeared her dog had also been struck and was in distress. The female was immediately taken by ambulance to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Sonoma County Animal Control also arrived and took custody of the dog, taking it to a local veterinarian.

An SRPD Accident Investigator and an Evidence Technician responded to the collision. The driver of the Honda had remained on scene and was cooperative and answering questions. The driver was assessed, and alcohol impairment was not a factor in the collision.

Based on witness statements and the statement of the driver, it appears the pedestrian entered the crosswalk from the north side of W. Steele Lane and began crossing to the south side. The driver of the Honda was traveling westbound on W. Steele lane, approaching the intersection at the light and crosswalk. Investigators are still trying to determine if the pedestrian or the driver had the right of way. It appears all traffic lights were functioning properly at the time of the collision. Speed does not initially appear to be a factor.

W. Steele Lane between Apache and Marlow Rd was shut down for approximately 2 hours.
The names of the driver and the pedestrian will not be released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Officer Mike Mieger.
