Lebanon, NH - Rail Trail - UPDATED Detour Routes - Reminder
Please be advised the Rail Trail (RT) detour has been updated. See RT Detour Map below.

The RT entrance at the High Street, Mascoma Street, and Mechanic Street intersection is closed until further notice. Please follow the alternate route shown in blue if you are currently on the RT heading toward the Tunnel or coming from the Tunnel.
For pedestrians/bicyclists connecting to the RT from Mascoma Street:
Because the north side of the Mascoma Street sidewalk (shown in red) is closed, and construction is underway at the intersection, please use the RT entrance located across from Alice Peck Day Hospital.
For pedestrians/bicyclists connecting to the RT from High Street:
Due to sidewalk closures at the intersection, please use alternate access points to the RT at the Tunnel east entrance or the CCBA.
Please note: Any crossing along undesignated routes is at your own risk. On the sections of the RT where users are temporarily detoured onto sidewalks, bicyclists should follow along on the roadway shoulder, adjacent to the painted detour markings, and obey the same road rules that apply to motor vehicles.
The RT detour was designed to provide the safest possible route for pedestrians and bicyclists to reconnect with the RT on the opposite side of the intersection, heading toward the tunnel. This route intentionally directs RT users away from heavy equipment on the southwest side and prevents anyone from entering areas with barricades, open trenches, or active construction.
We fully acknowledge that the detour is longer, more demanding, and requires additional time and physical effort. Safety is the City’s highest priority, and we selected this route to ensure users remain on paved sidewalks, stable asphalt, standard curb ramps, and existing crosswalks—all of which offer a more predictable and accessible surface. A shorter path would place pedestrians on unstable ground or in close proximity to heavy machinery. The contractor has also added high-visibility signs and painted markings on the sidewalks to help keep the route clear and easy to follow. For individuals with mobility challenges, planning ahead and/or considering Advance Transit service at the 20 Mechanic Street stop may provide an option to help bridge travel through the construction zone and reentry to the RT.
Please remember that this detour is temporary. Its length and limitations are necessary only during this particularly intense phase of construction. As soon as this work is complete, pathways will begin to reopen. The City is working hard to finish the major structural/drainage work ahead of schedule so that we can return to a shorter, more direct, and fully accessible route.
Thank you for your patience as we move through the most challenging part of the project!
