LAKE LBJ WATERFRONT PROPERTIES
As the flood surge from recent rains west of our region continues to move into our area, the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) River Management Team is taking additional proactive measures to lower the Highland Lakes as it moves from west to east.
LCRA plans to open at least one floodgate at Buchanan Dam on Sunday, July 19 around 5 p.m. Floodgates remain open at Wirtz Dam (as well as Starcke, Mansfield, and Tom Miller dams).
When flood gates open, a massive volume of water is released, causing river levels to rise rapidly and currents to become dangerously fast downstream. This water will flow through Lake LBJ and Lake Marble Falls then onto Lake Travis.
While most potential flooding in the Horseshoe Bay area will be mitigated, please keep in mind that flood events are not completely predictable and precautions should be taken.
Residents along the lake water’s edge, lake banks, and connected tributary creeks may experience water levels that exceed the banks and cause localized flooding or they may be impacted by incoming debris and faster currents.
Please Take the Following Recommended Actions
- Secure or remove any loose items near the water's edge — furniture, watercraft, dock equipment, coolers, tools, and similar property — to limit damage and reduce the chance of items being swept away.
- Monitor LCRA's Flood Status page for up-to-date information on this event at Hydromet - Flood Operations Report.
- Stay clear of the water. Hazards over the coming week may include flooding, floating and submerged debris, and elevated bacteria levels in flood water.
- If a roadway goes under water, turn around — don't drown. Never drive or walk through flooded roadways. Do not put yourself or others at risk.
