STORM ALERT: Winter Storm Sunday, February 1 & Snow Emergency Parking Ban Remains In Effect

Key Information:

  • Snow Emergency Parking Ban – REMAINS IN EFFECT.

  • Dangerous Cold - Through Saturday Morning.

  • Strong Coastal Winter Storm - Early Sunday morning through late Sunday Night.

  • Snow, Strong Winds, & Coastal Flooding Possible

Town staff continue to closely monitor weather conditions and will provide updates as needed.

Snow Emergency Parking Ban – REMAINS IN EFFECT

The Snow Emergency Parking Ban remains in effect on all streets posted as Emergency Snow Routes until further notice.

All vehicles must remain off designated snow emergency routes to allow Public Works crews to safely and efficiently clear roadways and sidewalks as snow removal operations continue.

Parking is available in the MacMillan Pier Lot (MPL), Grace Hall Lot, and other Town-owned lots throughout Provincetown.

Vehicles parked in violation of the ban are subject to ticketing and towing at the owner’s expense, pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40, Section 22D.

The ban may remain in place even after snowfall ends to allow DPW time to fully clear streets and address refreeze conditions.

Extreme Cold – Friday Night into Early Saturday

  • Arctic air remains in place across the region.

  • Hazardous wind chills through Saturday morning.

  • Wind chills as low as 15–25°F below zero.

  • Residents should limit time outdoors and take steps to protect people, pets, and pipes.

Winter Storm Outlook – Sunday into Monday

A strong coastal winter storm is expected to pass offshore of New England early Sunday morning into late Sunday might, with Provincetown and the Outer Cape likely to see the greatest impacts.

Potential impacts include:

  • Accumulating, plowable snow, especially Sunday into Sunday night (approximately 3-5”).

  • Strong to damaging wind gusts (30-50mph).

  • Difficult travel conditions.

  • Minor to moderate coastal flooding around high tides is possible. Current predictions are for 12’ tides at both 10am and 11pm on Sunday, February 1.

    • With the wind direction from the North / Northeast, we do not anticipate any serious impacts at this time, but encourage properties in the West End of town to take precautions.

  • Dangerous marine conditions with very high seas.

While forecast confidence continues to improve, exact snowfall totals and impacts will depend on the storm’s track.

Prevent Frozen & Burst Pipes

The Town is advising residents and property owners to take precautions ahead of very cold temperatures, which can increase the risk of frozen or burst water pipes. Taking a few preventive steps now can help avoid costly emergencies.

Residents and property owners are encouraged to:

  • Keep heat on in all buildings, including seasonal or vacant properties (generally no lower than 55°F).

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.

  • Let water run slightly (about the width of a pencil), especially faucets on exterior walls.

  • Seal drafts near pipes, vents, and foundation openings.

  • Insulate exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, and unheated areas.

  • Shut off and drain exterior water lines and hoses if not already done.
