Town of Whitman

Winter Storm Update

Good Evening,

This is an important message from Whitman Public Safety Officials.

Whitman is digging out after the Blizzard of 2026. Our Department of Public Works crews and contracted plow operators are working to clear roads and make them safe for travel.

🚫 PLEASE STAY OFF THE ROADS unless you are an essential worker or it is an emergency.

Governor Maura Healey has announced a travel ban for non-essential motor vehicle travel in Plymouth, Bristol, and Barnstable Counties. Whitman falls within this order.

Keeping traffic to a minimum allows plow crews to work efficiently and safely. Every vehicle on the road slows down snow removal operations and creates additional hazards for first responders and public works crews.

πŸ—‘οΈ Trash & Recycling Update
Due to the storm, trash and recycling will NOT be picked up tomorrow. Collection will operate on a two-day delay schedule. Please plan accordingly and help keep barrels clear of snow so crews can access them safely when collection resumes.

πŸ™ A Special Thank You
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Whitman Fire and Police personnel. During the height of the storm when travel was extremely hazardous both departments responded to numerous calls for service and remained fully committed to protecting our residents. Their dedication and professionalism do not go unnoticed.

πŸ›‘ Safety Reminders After the Storm:

πŸ”₯ Clear Outside Vents
Heavy snow and drifting can block:

  • Dryer vents

  • Furnace vents

  • Hot water heater vents

Blocked vents can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup inside your home or business. Make sure all exterior exhaust vents are clear and free of snow.

⚠️ Generator Safety

  • NEVER run generators inside homes, garages, or enclosed spaces.

  • Keep generators at least 20 feet away from buildings with the exhaust pointed away from windows and doors.

  • Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

πŸ’ͺ Shoveling Safety

  • Take frequent breaks.

  • Push snow when possible instead of lifting.

  • Stay hydrated.

  • If you feel chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath stop immediately and seek medical attention.

  • Check on elderly neighbors who may need assistance.

πŸš’ Fire Hydrants
If you are able, please clear snow around fire hydrants near your property. In an emergency, every second counts.

πŸš— Parking & Access

  • Avoid parking on roadways to allow plows full access.

  • Clear sidewalks adjacent to your property.

  • Keep catch basins clear as temperatures rise to help prevent street flooding.

πŸ“ž In case of emergency, dial 911.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work together to recover from this historic storm.
