Storm Response Update; Special Tree/Limb Pickup Information
Crews from the City’s Public Works Department and Fire Department have been responding to widespread storm damage and storm-related incidents following the severe storms that struck Wheaton shortly before noon on Monday, July 27, affecting nearly all areas of the City.
Staff from all Public Works divisions have been deployed to assist with debris cleanup, prioritizing efforts to address immediate threats to life or property first, with broader emergency operations to follow. Crews have canvassed the City and reopened roadways wherever possible, with the exception of locations involving downed live wires awaiting ComEd removal. For the safety of the community and removal crews, the City must wait for ComEd to remove downed power lines before the City can safely remove trees in these areas and open these roads to traffic. Please do not drive, walk or ride around barricades.
Due to the widespread damage throughout the community, City crews will be providing one citywide pickup of all trees and branches placed at the curb by Monday, Aug. 3. You do not need to bundle or prepare tree limbs or branches for them to be picked up. The City will make one pass throughout the community to pick up tree damage. You can place storm damage from both parkway trees and other storm-related tree damage on your property. Please ensure your trees/branches are at the curb by 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, as the City will only make one pass through the community. Once the City completes its pass, you will again be responsible for tree debris removal originating from your property. This work is expected to take several weeks to complete.
To assist our crews with safe and efficient pickup, please do not pile home debris or any other material with tree branches at the curb. Only trees and branches will be collected.
The Wheaton Fire Department responded to more than 100 calls between approximately 11:55 a.m. and 6 p.m. related to storm damage, downed power/communication wires, and fires caused by live electrical wires. Firefighters responded to two minor structure fires and multiple incidents involving electrical equipment. The City has not received any reports of injuries resulting from this storm.
The strong storms caused widespread power outages in our area, and ComEd crews continue working to restore service. As of this morning, ComEd estimates that approximately 80 percent of affected customers in DuPage County will have service restored by noon Wednesday, July 29. The remaining 20 percent are estimated to be restored by Friday, July 31.
The City’s Forestry Division is responsible for the care of all parkway trees, which generally includes trees located between the sidewalk (if there is one) and the street. If you need to report an issue involving a parkway tree, please use the City’s online Service Request Form at www.wheaton.il.us/servicerequest.
