Celebrate Wheaton’s History during Preservation Month

Wheaton Informs
In celebration of Wheaton’s history, the Wheaton Historic Commission invites the community to participate in several events during Preservation Month in May.

Start off by exploring Wheaton’s historic sites designated with Preservation Week signs. In early May, the Historic Commission will display blue signs in front of more than 160 historic homes, buildings and sites. Scan the QR code on any sign to check out the interactive Wheaton Historic Register Map, which provides information for each location such as the date built, prominent citizens of the past who lived there, or the architectural style.

Interested in learning more about your historic property? Register for Home History Research Help on May 4 or May 18. Reserve a 30-minute time slot to get one-on-one help discovering available resources, where to find them, and what each resource may reveal. Two sessions will be offered at the Wheaton Public Library, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. May 4 and 18. Drop-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended. Contact Adult Services at 630-868-7520 or visit the Reference Desk on the second floor to make a reservation.

Also, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, visit the Wheaton Historic Commission Info Table at the Library, 225 N. Cross St. Representatives from the Historic Commission will be there to meet the public, answer questions about the commission's Register of Historic Places, and share their passion for Wheaton's history. For more information, visit the library website at Wheaton Historic Commission Info Table | Wheaton Public Library.

Learn more about Wheaton’s past by attending the History Talk: Centennial of Theosophical Society in Wheaton at 7 p.m. May 13 at the Wheaton Public Library. The Theosophical Society is celebrating 100 years since construction of its headquarters at 1926 N. Main St. Films and photos will illustrate how this architectural treasure came to Wheaton and its impact on the community. To register, visit the Wheaton Public Library's website.
