Here is what went on last week at Lytle P.D. (with some other fillers thrown in). Officers handled 49 calls for service and conducted 63 traffic stops. Of those 63 stops, 29 resulted in citations and 34 were warnings. It wasn’t too busy last week, I’m thankful for that. There was a lot of paperwork stacking up and case follow-ups that needed to be done, so it worked out well.
There were three arrests last week, with only one resulting in a trip to jail. The other two received citations and were then released. #1 – A traffic stop on Main St. resulted in the “cite and release” of a 20-year-old male for possession of drug paraphernalia. #2 – A report of a male urinating in public resulted in the “cite and release” of the 61-year-old for disorderly conduct. #3 – A traffic stop on Railroad St. resulted in the arrest of a 21-year-old male for failure to ID (fugitive from justice). He tried to lie about his identity because he had a warrant out of Hays County for domestic violence. He was arrested on the warrant and picked up another charge. He was booked into the Atascosa County Jail.
There were three property crimes reported last week … #1 – A complainant reported they left their $1,200 cell phone on the counter when they checked out at H.E.B. Plus. #2 – A complainant called to report she lost her wallet and cell phone, but said it might have occurred in Natalia. #3 – H.E.B. Plus reported a shoplifting event that occurred on May 6th. $900 worth of product was stolen.
I was out of town, and I received a call saying that we had a 14-year-old missing girl, with circumstances that concerned me. Luckily, I had Cpl. Robison and Ofc. /Inv. A. Lopez managing the call. The juvenile female had been missing since the morning, but wasn’t reported to us until around 4:30 PM. Officers tried to recover a video that may have captured her leaving, but left empty-handed. They then resorted to old-fashioned police work. It paid off! Cpl. Robison patrolled around looking for her and located the juvenile; she was okay. I was relieved when I got that call.
I did see a service call where an officer assisted a motorist with directions to San Antonio. Turn back the clock. I remember when getting flagged down for directions happened numerous times a day. We can call that the pre-smartphone days. People would be heading to Corpus Christi and end up on IH-35 instead of IH-37. By the time they got to Lytle, they could tell they were headed the wrong way. I can’t even count all the times I had that conversation.
As a cop, I don’t always deal with the good parts of society. Last Monday night, my 17-year-old son attended a Bible study in Devine and was driving my old 1999 Ford diesel pickup. Well, the fuel gauge isn’t as accurate as it once was, and he ran out of diesel, blocking the road out on CR 5710. I headed that way, when I got there two nice ladies stopped and offered to bring back some diesel (they lived just down the road). We were quickly on our way; they refused payment for diesel. It reminded me that most people are good! It was sure nice to run into these wonderful ladies.
I made a quick trip to Lubbock, if there is such a thing. There is only so much to see in Ballinger, Menard, Eden, Paint Rock, the list goes on. I was able to eat a few nice meals. The Blacklands Smokehouse in downtown Snider hit the spot, a unique big place with food served from a food truck inside a big building. I had ribs and brisket, no sides … too many carbs and too much sugar. Hidden out in the country, near Preston Smith Lubbock International Airport, is The Escondido Grill, which is located on the Spirit Ranch Events Venue property. Another nice, big place with great food. If you're ever in Menard, stop by the Texas Scratch Kitchen. It’s a nice little coffee, salad, and sandwich place. I finished off the trip home with a stop in Junction at the Junction Burger Company; I had the hamburger salad. It was a great salad with a hamburger patty on top.
What does most of this have to do with the Lytle Police Department? Not really anything. Just my way of letting you see into the life of your Chief of Police, a regular old working man devoted to God and family. I try to be humble and serve others. If one day I make a mistake, I will be the first to admit it. -Richey
