Press Release: Audit Released on City of Johnston’s Finances

JOHNSTON, Iowa (Tuesday, April 7, 2026) — Bohnsack & Frommelt LLP released an audit report on the City of Johnston, Iowa. The city’s revenues totaled $64,123,988 for the year ended June 30, 2025, representing an 8.91 percent increase from the prior year.    

"We are pleased with the overall results of the audit for the City of Johnston," said Sarah Swisher, Finance Director. "We are committed to transparency and open communication with our residents regarding the use of their funds. Regular audits help us maintain accountability and provide opportunities for continuous improvement in our financial practices."


Revenues included:
  • $19,856,469 in property tax,
  • $11,132,003 from Tax increment financing,
  • $6,084,357 from other city taxes,
  • $726,959 from licenses and permits
  • $3,424,623 from the use of money and property,
  • $7,248,326 from Intergovernmental,
  • $14,884,348 from charges for services,
  • $140,481 from special assessments, and
  • $626,422 from other miscellaneous revenues.    
     
Expenses for the city’s governmental activities totaled $53,683,379, a 3.96 percent increase from the prior year. Expenses included:
  • $12,313,037 for public safety,
  • $4,188,216 for public works,
  • $35,600 for health and social services,
  • $4,394,988 for culture and recreation,
  • $2,181,986 for community development,’
  • $2,178,667 for general government,
  • $15,721,446 for debt service, and
  • $12,669,439 from capital outlay.

Expenses for business-type activities totaled $12,165,523, a 3.41 percent increase. Expenses included:
  • $6,792,968 for water,
  • $4,564,158 for sewer, and
  • $808,397 for stormwater.
