ADVISORY - Hawaii DCR Alert - UPDATE - Missing Work Furlough Inmate Returned To Custody
HONOLULU — Oʻahu Community Correctional Center work furlough inmate John Mahaulu is back in OCCC custody as of 12:10 a.m. Sunday, May 4, 2025, after he turned himself in at the Kapolei Police Station Saturday night. State sheriff’s deputies transported him to OCCC from the police station.
Mahaulu, 38, left Module 20 on a furlough pass Thursday morning, May 1, 2025, and was supposed to return at 9:30 p.m. State Sheriffs and the Honolulu Police Department were notified.
Mahaulu is serving time for second-degree robbery and first-degree criminal property damage. He may face a second-degree escape charge, a Class C felony that is punishable by up to five years in prison, if convicted.
Mahaulu is a community custody inmate in the work furlough program with pass privileges. Community custody is the lowest security custody classification.
