Hawaii DCR Alert - Missing Hawaiʻi Community Correctional Center Inmate Arrested, Two Other Inmates Remain Missing

HILO  Inmate Joseph C. Fernandez, one of three inmates who left the Hawaiʻi Community Correctional Center (HCCC) Hale Nani site without permission on Hawaiʻi island Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, has been returned to custody at HCCC. 

The Hawaiʻi County Police Department arrested Fernandez, 35, at the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in Kaʻu Wednesday night, Dec. 18, 2024. Inmates Kawai J. Pomroy, 41, and Clyde T. Loa, 31, remain at large.

Prosecutors charged Fernandez with second-degree escape, first-degree theft (motor vehicle) and first-degree unauthorized entry in to a motor vehicle.

Police located a Hale Nani employeeʻs vehicle, described as a dark gray 2014 Nissan Altima, at Ocean View Estates. The employee discovered the vehicle missing around the same time Hale Nani staff reported the three inmates missing at approximately 4:30 p.m. Friday. Hale Nani is located of Highway 11.

Pomroy
is 6 feet, 2 inches, weighs approximately 208 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He is serving time for misdemeanor abuse of a family or household member.


Loa is 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighs approximately 165 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He is serving time for unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, resist order to stop a motor vehicle and unauthorized possession of confidential information.

All three inmates are considered community custody, the lowest-security custody classification.
