BCFD knocks down E. Kingman Ave. house fire; two firefighters recovering after fall

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Battle Creek Fire Department and LifeCare Ambulance responded shortly after 7 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, to a report of a possible residential structure fire in the 100 block of E. Kingman Avenue.
Car 3 and Engine 3 arrived to find a working fire in the rear of the home. Truck 1 assisted Engine 3 with placing a hose line for extinguishment, while Rescue 2 established a water supply and performed a primary search of the first floor. Engine 4 and Rescue 6 also supported fireground operations.
Fire crews brought the blaze under control in under 10 minutes.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries after falling through a large hole that had burned through the first-floor dining area. Both declined medical treatment on scene and are recovering at home. They are expected to return to duty on their next shift. No civilian injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal.
Reminder: Free smoke alarms and CO detectors available
The BCFD reminds all city homeowners that free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are available for installation through a Fire Prevention and Safety Grant. Working alarms save lives, and firefighters encourage every home to check alarms regularly. Alert devices are also available for neighbors who are hearing impaired.
